Our Story
It started with entrenched bureaucracy.
Andrew Arthurs, the founder, saw that homeowners needing professional-grade heating and cooling appliances were stuck with limited options, high prices and opaque (or misleading) information due to the HVAC industry’s long-standing policy, called “three tier distribution”, where a manufacturer sells the product only to a wholesaler, who then sells it only to an HVAC contractor, who then finally sells it to a homeowner (a lot of hands in the “cookie jar”), but never directly to homeowners. Having previously owned an HVAC contracting business, he witnessed first-hand how HVAC factories, to protect their network’s profits, made elaborate efforts to block homeowners from buying products at wholesale prices.
So, Andrew invented a new way of getting pro-grade HVAC products to everyday homeowners when, in 2002, he and his cofounder Karen Tovey leveraged Andrew's industry relationships to open the world’s first HVAC store on the internet, disintermediating a legacy supply chain.
This was a radical idea at the time, and the old guard didn’t like it. For years HVAC leaders tried to shut Alpine down, but without success; Alpine was determined and prevailed. Homeowners were now empowered with transparent information and the ability to buy more affordable products, delivered to their doorsteps, with better outcomes for their homes and families.
Alpine’s concern grew to include global warming, knowing HVAC products use a significant percentage of the country’s fossil fuels. In 2014, Alpine began to manufacture its own line of equipment, BLUERIDGE, featuring energy efficient and all-electric technology. The same spirit that pioneered the original industry revolution sparked this lineup of intelligent, high quality and affordable products, with customers giving BLUERIDGE top reviews.
Today, Alpine remains innovative, adaptive, and empathetic to its customers’ need for quality products and genuinely helpful service. In a competitive, yet relatively recession-proof industry, Alpine drives improvements and growth every year.
